Softball Season Kicks Off

Softball Season Kicks Off

The 2019 Softball Season has officially started. The Koalas are eager to get things rolling and show the entire campus and community how far they've come. That was clearly the mission as the Koalas went out to take on powerhouse USC-Beaufort. USCB in recent years has been a constant top 25 team in the nation. Last year the Koalas faced them and were outscored 20-0 and 17-0, but this year was a completely different story. Although the outcome still resulted in losing both games the Koalas made sure that both games were competitive. Game 1 ended in a 2-0 loss and the second game was 6-3.

Both games featured a number of Freshman making their collegiate debut on the field. Starting pitcher for the Koalas was Freshman Elizabeth Stroud. She threw all 7 innings for her first complete game of the season. She walked away with 2 strikeouts, 2 walks and an ERA (earned run average) of 4.0. For a freshman to go up against a team of that caliber and only give up 4 runs that shows the kind of talent and mental toughness that will be needed to compete in this conference and be successful as the year progesses.

Helping Stroud with some offense, were Freshman Taylor Hannah, Madison Wren, Hallie Robertson and Gabby Lawrence. All of which were able to record their first hit as a collegiate athlete. Robertson and sophomore Alexus Jennings were the only players to have an extre base hit. Robertson also was the only freshman to have an RBI in those games. Scoring for the Koalas was Jennings, Wren, and Junior McKenzie Schaller.

With those first games out of the way, the Koalas are going to re-group and take some time off before their next game. On February 16th, the Koalas head to Point University.
