Bio

In 2015, Dr. Kirt Moody became the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) in the Columbia College Department of Athletics. As the FAR, he serves as a bridge between athletic and academic programs, supporting teams, advocating for athletes, guiding practices and policies, and cheering for Koalas.

Moody is a Professor of Biology and Environmental Science at Columbia College. He grew up along the coast of Maine, developing an appreciation for tongue-in-cheek humor and good seafood. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology at the University of Maine, and a Master of Science in Oceanography from the University of Maine Darling Marine Center, pursuing interests in lobster ecology.

After working as a fishery scientist and diving consultant, Moody accepted a fellowship to study the Chesapeake Bay blue crabs and completed his Ph.D. at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

Since earning his Doctorate, Moody has taught sciences and mentored student research at numerous schools, including The College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, VA.), Hamilton College (Clinton, NY.), SUNY Albany (NY.), and Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, MS.); finally joining the faculty at Columbia College in 2003.

Throughout his career, Moody’s favorite courses have included: Biodiversity, Ecology, Zoology, Botany, Genetics, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Earth Science, and Environmental Science. He has served as Chair of Biological Sciences, Chair of Environmental Studies, and Dean of Business, Mathematics, and Sciences.
