Koalas Sweep Last Two AAC Series

The Columbia College softball team swept its last two Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series, defeating Montreat College (Apr. 13) and Bluefield College (Apr. 15). The Koalas recorded two shutouts and allowed just seven runs.

In the doubleheader with Montreat, Columbia College shut out the Cavilers 6-0. Meghan Dennis allowed just one hit, one walk, and recorded a strikeout. The Koalas recorded nine hits, with Madison Hearn and Kristin Wemes finishing with two each.

Columbia College won game two, 4-3. Kiley Smith, who allowed just six hits, pitched a complete game. Mary-Catherine Sanders finished the game with two hits and a run to lead the Koalas offensively.

In the doubleheader with Bluefield, Columbia College put up 17 runs and allowed just four. In game one, the Koalas came from 3-2 down to win 5-4. After putting up two runs in the first, the Rams scored the next three runs, two in the second and one in the fourth, to take the one-run advantage. Madison Hearn hit an RBI double to left field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to push the Koalas ahead 4-3. Columbia College tacked on an additional run in the sixth while Bluefield put up one in the seventh for the final score.

Game two of the Bluefield doubleheader belonged solely to Columbia College. The Koalas pitchers allowed just three hits in the five-inning 12-0 shutout. Meghan Dennis went four innings allowing the three hits with a strikeout and a walk. Jenna Heath entered the game for the final inning, facing the minimum batters (3).

Kristin Weems finished the game 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs to lead the team at the plate. Madison Lee also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

The Koalas finished the game with 10 hits, 10 RBIs, and six walks.

Columbia College will return to the circle tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 16, when they host Johnson University (Tenn.) in an AAC doubleheader. It will be Senior Day for the Koalas, with recognition beginning at 1:45 p.m.
