Koalas Tournament Run Ends with a Loss to Brenau

Kingsport, Tenn. – The Columbia College softball team ended its historic season with a 3-2 loss to No. 4 Brenau, Wednesday, Apr. 27. It was the Koalas third game in two days at the 2022 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Softball Tournament. 

Columbia College finished the season with a 22-19 overall record and 15-13 in the AAC. The AAC record set a new school record for most conference wins in a single season and afforded the Koalas a berth in the AAC Tournament for the first time since 2016.

Brenau, (28-15) advanced to face Reinhardt.

After two scoreless innings, Columbia College got on the scoreboard first. In the bottom of the third inning, Kristin Wemes hit an RBI single to center field to score Kinsley Goza, who reached the via error earlier in the inning to give the Koalas the early 1-0 lead.

Brenau would not be denied as they used four hits to put up three runs in the top of the fourth to take the two-run advantage, 3-1.

Heading into the sixth inning with the same score, Wemes led off the Koalas half of the inning with a double to left field and subsequently scored off an error by the Tigers to cut the deficit to one.

Columbia College had one last opportunity in the final inning but could not cross the plate.

Wemes finished the game 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Madison Hearn went 2-for-3.

Elizabeth Stroud, who went 3.3 innings with two strikeouts was the losing pitcher of record.
