Koalas Sweep Bluefield Behind Big Day at the Plate

Bluefield, VA- Columbia Softball got back in action Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Virginia to take on Bluefield in makeup action after last Friday's doubleheader was rained out.

The Koalas will return home with the sweep after taking game one in 10 innings, 7-6, and then the late game, 7-5.

Columbia now owns an 18-20 record with four more games in the 2023 campaign.

GAME ONE:

Columbia trailed 1-0 heading into the fifth inning; that deficit was soon erased with a six-run avalanche. Madison Hearn started things with an RBI single to left field; a few batters later, Rachel McMillan went deep to left center, bringing in four runs. Kylie Smith brought the sixth and final run of the inning with an RBI single, plating Madison Lee

The Koalas took the 6-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Rams wouldn't go down without a fight. The hosts tallied five runs to force extra innings, scoring on two RBI singles and an error.

After a scoreless 8th and 9th inning, Skyler Monson brought the winning run in with some help from an error.

Bailey Strickland shut the Rams down in their chance to bat, helping the Koalas hold on for their eighth conference win.

GAME TWO:

The Koalas played from in front first until the Rams used a three-run third inning to battle back.

However, the rally was quickly silenced when Columbia tallied five more runs over their next two chances to bat. Bluefield scored once in their next two trips to the plate, but Kylie Smith held off the comeback effort in the circle, striking out three batters in two innings of work.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

The Koalas tallied 24 total hits, 15 in game one and nine in game two.
