Koalas Women’s Basketball Roll Past Johnson (Tenn.) to Pick Up First Win of the Season

Columbia, SC (11-20-21) – Columbia College (SC) women's basketball team outscored Johnson University (Tenn.) 27-7 in the third quarter to roll past the Royals, 63-41, in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup, to pick up its first win of the season. The win is also the first conference win for the Koalas, whose record sits at 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the AAC.

With the loss, Johnson remains winless on the season with an 0-6 overall and 0-5 on the AAC. 

Columbia College dominated from start to finish.  The Koalas held the Royals to single-digit scoring in three-of-four quarters.  Johnson did manage to outscore Columbia College 17-12 in the second quarter to force a 25-25 tie heading into intermission.

"It was a good team effort in picking up our first win of the season," said head coach James Black. "We made changes on both offense and defense that helped in the effort. 

The Koalas outscored the Royals 44-14 in the paint and outrebounded them by 1, 51-50. More importantly, Columbia College scored 23 points off Johnson's 20 turnovers.

Black added, "We communicated very well in the second half, which aided in the win."

In the second half, the Koalas outscored Johnson 38-16.

Carnasia Wells led Columbia College with 14 points and six assists.

Wynter Webb was the only other Koala player to score double figures with 13.  Hali Doctor, LaRonda Quattlebaum, and Nyla Jackson each pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.

Johnson was led in scoring by Jordan Smith and Tori Teesateski, who scored 12 points each. Josie Hardin added eight points with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Columbia College will return to action, Tuesday, Nov. 23, when they host cross-town rivals CIU in an AAC contest at 5:30 p.m.
