Koalas Make History at the 2023 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships

Brookings, SD- A historic weekend for the Columbia College Indoor Track and Field team culminates in the best finish for any Columbia team ever at a National Championship.

With 27 points, all earned by the 1-2-4-5 finish in the 3000m race walk event, the Women's team finished in 7th place. The previous best finish for a team was 8th place by the 2017 Women's Swimming team. 

HISTORY MADE:

  • Sophomore Izabelle Trefts won the 3000m race walk with a time of 14:31.74, the first National Champion in school history. 

 

  • The 27 points scored in the race walk is also the highest total score for any school in the event since 1993.

 

  • Victoria Heiser-Whatley became a four-time All-American, finishing second in the race walk with a time of 15:31.67.

 

  • Sophomore Rhyan Reinsel, the first Koala to qualify for the Men's National Indoor Championships, competed in the 400-meter dash. 

 

  • Sophomore Darci Dawson competed in the weight throw as the first female in school history to qualify for a National Indoor Championships throwing event.

 

With a successful indoor season wrapped up, the Koala Track and Field teams will now turn to the outdoor season. The first event of the season, The Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational, will be held March 16-18 in Myrtle Beach, SC.
