Koalas Battle, Fall Short Against St. Andrews

Columbia, SC – The Columbia College women's volleyball team played a solid but fell short, dropping an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) home match to St. Andrews, 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-12).

Kristin Wemes recorded a double-double, 10 kills-10 digs, to lead Columbia College (0-16, 0-11 AAC).

Czana Doctor added four kills and three block assists, and Amiri Mason contributed 10 digs in the match.  Zoe Jackson was solid at the net, recording six total blocks.

Ashley McGugan and Samantha Vernati led St. Andrews (4-15, 3-8 AAC) in kills with 11 and 10, respectively.

St. Andrews took control of set one early, jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead and pushing the lead to 12-4 before Columbia College found some offense. The Koalas scored three straight points and 11-of-13 to cut the deficit to two, 16-14.

St. Andrews closed set one with a 9-3 run for the 25-17 win.

Columbia College opened set two with a 5-1 run and increased its lead to 12-4 before St. Andrew increased their offensive intensity. The Knights used a 10-2 run to close the gap to two and concluded a 16-1 run to tie the game at 23-all.

A kill by Doctor stopped the run, setting up set point, but the Knights scored the final two points to win the set 26-24.

After starting set three with a 2-2 tie, St. Andrews strung together the 7-of-8 points to take a 9-3 lead and force a timeout by Columbia College.

The Koalas never truly regrouped from the early set deficit, dropping the final set 25-12 and the match 3-0.

Columbia College will Bryan Friday in a 6:30 p.m. AAC match.
