Men's Soccer Earns Draw with SMC in Opener

SPARTANBURG, SC - The Columbia College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw on the road Friday afternoon in their season opener at Spartanburg Methodist College.

 Senior Alexis Salazar got the Koalas on the board first scoring in the 35th minute of the first half to put Columbia up 1-0 at the break. Salazar, a senior midfielder, scored off freshman midfielder Noah Poungthana's assist.

In the second half, the Pioneers finally got the equalizer in the 81st minute on a penalty kick.

Sophomore Goalkeeper Brayden Garcia made 3 saves on 4 shots  on goal while SMC barely edged out the Koalas 9-8 on the shot count.

The Koalas will next return to Columbia for their home opener on Wednesday at 7:30 pm to host Middle Georgia State from Younts Stadium.
