Men's Tennis Splits Matches on the Week

JOHNSON CITY, TN - The Columbia College men's tennis team split their two matches last week falling 4-3 on the road at Johnson University on Monday before beating Div. III Maryville College 5-2 at home on Friday.

In the Johnson loss, the Koalas received wins from junior Liam Barry and freshman Jonah Haller at the top doubles line by a 6-2 score while also receiving singles wins from Barry at #1, Haller at #2, and sophomore Tiaan Jacobs at #3. However, it was not enough as Johnson won 2 of the 3 doubles matches for the one point while also winning the lower three singles bouts at 4, 5, and 6.

Sophomore Owen Brumfield and Jacobs fell 6-3 at the 2 spot while sophomore Connor Dupree and freshman Michael Schiesz lost 6-2 at the #3 doubles line. Barry won 6-3, 7-5 at #1 singles while Haller won 7-6, 6-0 at #2 and Jacobs won 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 at the competitive 3 spot. 

In the Maryville match, Columbia got off to a 0-1 start as they dropped two of the three doubles matches. Barry and Haller lost 3-6 at the top line  while Jacobs and Brumfield won 6-2 at the 2 spot. However, Schiesz and Dupree fell 2-6 at the 3 line. 

Columbia then dominated the singles matches winning five of the six bouts. Barry won 6-1, 6-4 at the top line while Haller recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win at #2. Jacobs then won 6-2, 6-4 at #3 while Brumfield grabbed a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Finally, senior Ethan Poungthana rallied to win 4-6, 6-4, 1-0.

Columbia improves to 5-4 overall and will next go on the road Friday to face Pikeville (KY) at 4 PM.
