
Men's Tennis Competes at Coker Invite
HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Columbia College men's tennis team competed in the Div. II Coker Invitational over the weekend in nearby Florence against all NCAA Division 2 opponents featuring Benedict College, Chowan Univ., Coker Univ., and Johnson C. Smith.
Leading the way for the Koalas in Flight A singles was senior Liam Barry, who went 0-2 to finish 6th falling 0-6, 0-6 and then 5-7, 4-6 in the 5th place match.
In Flight B Singles, Columbia was led by sophomore Jonah Haller as he went 0-2 dropping his prelim match 4-6, 4-6 to JCSU and then fell 3-6, 3-6 to Benedict in his consolation.
In Flight C singles, the Koalas were led by freshman Gabriel Kian as he went 3-1 climbing through the entire consolaton bracket to fight back and place 5th in the 18-man bracket. Kian dropped his opener 2-6, 4-6 before winning 6-0, 6-3 and 7-5, 3-1 for fifth. Also competing was junior Owen Brumfield as he went 2-2 to place 6th falling in the fifth place match to his teammate. Brumfield fell 1-6, 2-6 in his opener before winning his next two matches over Chowan 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-3. Thomas Remely was also in Flight C and went 2-2 placing 7th winning 6-0, 6-0 in his consolation over Chowan before falling to Brumfield.
In the doubles bracket, three Koala teams competed led by the top team of Barry and Haller as they won their first two matches 6-3 and by retirement over Coker and Chowan to advance to the Flight B Finals where they fell to the team from Benedict, 6-2. The second doubles team from Columbia to compete was Kian and junior Owen Brumfield as they fell 2-6 in their opener before winning 6-0 in the consolaton, but then fell in the 5th place match 6-2. The team of freshmen Thomas Remely and Andrew Broyles also competed and finished 7th going 0-3.
The Koala men will next be in action when they travel to Raleigh to battle William Peace Univ. on Oct. 26 at 2 pm.
