Men's Outdoor Track Competes in Shamrock Invite

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Columbia College men's outdoor track and field team competed at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach last weekend and finished 27th overall as a team. 

The Koalas were led in the sprints by freshmen Bradley Tilby and Deshawn Mungo as each placed in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 110 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles respectvely. Tilby qualifed fifth in the prelims with a time of 10.85 seconds in the 100 meters but faded to 20th in the semis with a time of 11.1. Mungo then qualified in 3rd with a time of 16.1 seconds in the 110 Hurdles but fell to 13th in the semis in 16.3.

The men were then led by freshman Willy Calcano, junior Jaden Watt-Martin, sophomore Caleb Bailey and Tilby in the 4x100 Meter Relay as they finished an impressive 5th overall out of 30 schools in a time of 42.2 seconds. 

Tilby finished 26th out of 100 in the 200 meters in a time of 22.38 seconds while Watt-Martin placed 36th in 22.5. Calcno came in 47th in the 200 in 22.8 as well.

Freshman Kimarje White also qualified in 6th in the hurdles in 16.9 and went on to finish 17th overall while Mungo then came in 11th overall in the 400 meter hurdles in 58.2. White was right behidn in 14th in the 400 hurdles in 58.8.

Bailey then led the team in the 400 meter Collegiate division placing 17th out of 33 in a time of 50.4 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay team consisting of White, Kendell Stroman, junior Xavier Linen, and Bailey also placed 15th in 3:37.9 out of 23 teams. Freshmen Kendell Stroman and Christian Harris also competed in the 400 meter open division running times of 52.3 and 53.2 seconds respectively to place 12th and 21st out of 57 runners.

In the field events...

Junior Gavin Rice led CC in the Hammer Throw placing 41st with a mark of 36 meters while sophomore Geo Tobias came in 46th at 29.9 meters on day one last Thursday. Watt-Martin then led the Koalas in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.94 meters to place 35th out of 60 while freshman Tyler Dixon was 39th at 5.87 meters. Bailey also competed and had a mark of 5.85 meters to come in 41st. Finally, freshman Jarek Ascensio ended day two by competing in the Javelin and came in 18th place out of 45 with a throw of 43.2 meters.

On day three of the field events, Columbia was led by freshman Guruveer Jhaj placing 36th in the Discus with a throw of 32.8 meters while sophomore Benjamin Marabella placed 41st at 31.85 meters. Ascensio was also 45th at 30.4 while Tobias came in 49th at 29.7. In the shot put, Columbia was led by Rice coming in 37th with a throw of 11.29 meters while Tobais came in 39th in 11 meters. Dixon then wrapped up day three with a 14th place finish in the Triple Jump with a mark of 12.37 meters.

The track and field team will next be in action this weekend (March 22-23) at the Montreat College Meet in Asheville.
