Men's Track Competes at D-3 Emory in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Columbia College men's track and field team competed at the Div. III Emory Thrills in the Hills Individual Meet over the weekend at Emory University in Atlanta.

Leading the Koala men in the field events was senior Gavin Rice as he placed 16th out of 40 in the Shot Put on Saturday with a mark of 11.7 meters. Sophomore Sam Ah Ping then followed him coming in 22nd with a throw of 11.18 meters. He was followed by fellow sophomore Jonathan Davis placing 26th at 10.59 meters.

In the other field event on Saturday, the Long Jump, freshman Jayden Young stepped up and placed 20th overall out of 36 competitors (7th in NAIA) with a mark of 6.18 meters (20.3 ft) while teammate, sophomore Tyler Dixon then came in 26th place at 6 meters (19.8 ft).

In the other field events on Friday, the men saw sophomore Jarek Asencio throw a good mark in the Javelin placing 12th out of 31 with a throw of 44.36 meters (145 ft) to come in 6th among NAIA schools. In the Discus, CC was led by senior Daylon McDonald placing 9th out of 30 (5th in NAIA) with a mark of 40.77 meters while J. Davis finished 23rd at 31.9 meters. Then, in the Hammer Throw, G. Rice again led CC placing 17th with a throw of 39.4 meters (129 ft) while McDonald came in 22nd at 35.6 meters. Finally, in the Triple Jump, T. Dixon again led the Koalas placing 10th of 15 with a jump of 12.44 meters (40.9 ft).

Junior Kristian Sanchez finished 19th (4th in NAIA) in the 5000m (3.2 miles) on Friday morning with a time of 17:58 before running in the 1500m on Saturday morning and placed 39th in 4:43.

In the 400m Hurdles on Friday, CC was led by sophomore Kimarje White placing 10th of 30 with a quality time of 57.66 seconds while J. Young then came in 21st place, four seconds behind in 1:01. 

Of the nine teams competing in the 4x400m Relay, Columbia finished 4th overall but First in the NAIA in 3:24 with a team of Tristen Patterson, K. White, Xavier Linen, and Caleb Bailey. Then, the 4x100m Relay team came in 3rd place overall out of 9 teams with a time of 42 seconds flat. The team of Dominick Young, Willy Calcano, Patterson, and Bradley Tilby were just 0.85 seconds off the winning time from Emory.

In the men's 200 meters on Friday, freshman Tristen Patterson went on to place in a tie for 16th overall out of 75 in a time of just over 22 seconds while sophomore W. Calcano finished 35th in 22.6 seconds. Freshman Ashton Pouncie then came in 45th place in 22.9 seconds while junior Caleb Bailey was 63rd in 23.5 seconds.

Then in the 400 meters on Saturday, Columbia was led by freshman D. Young placing 11th overall out of 50 in a time of 50.1 seconds while three Koalas then placed 21st, 23rd and 25th. In 21st was K. White in 51.37 sec., Pouncie in 23rd in 51.5 sec, and Bailey in 25th in 51.76 seconds. Freshman Ryan Flowers also competed and ran a time of 52.6 seconds to place 34th.

Finally, in the 100m qualifying rounds on Saturday, Patterson led the pack placing 3rd overall out of 52 with a time of 11 seconds flat while Calcano came in 8th place in 11.1. Dom Young and Flowers then came in 33rd and 35th in 11.5 seconds. Then, in the 100 meter prelims, Columbia had Patterson and Tilby compete but neither was able to qualify for the 100 finals. Patterson ran a 10.92 time to finish 14th while Tilby was at 10.97 to come in 15th place out of 20.

Columbia will next head to High Point, NC to compete in the VertKlasse Meeting on Friday and Saturday of this week.
