Home Runs from Sharp and Azurdia Not Enough in Loss to Reinhardt

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College softball team hit two home runs and 12 hits on the day but would fall just short against #25 Reinhardt University (Ga.), the defending AAC Champs, on Sunday afternoon.

RU won game one 9-5 before also taking game two 7-3.

Game 1

The Lady Eagles led 2-0 after one before the Koalas came back with a big three-run homer from senior 3B Aislyn Sharp in the 2nd inning that gave the Koalas the lead. A two-out rally was begun by 2B Brooklyn Franco's HBP before Mary-Catherine Sanders' single put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Sharp then followed with her massive home run over the left field wall for the 3-2 CC lead.

A homer from RU in the third tied the game before RU re-took the lead 4-3 in the 5th. Reinahrdt then put the game away with a 5-run 6th inning on 3 hits and an error to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Columbia scored two runs in the 7th on a Kylie Smith sac fly scoring Sharp and a Hope Azurdia RBI double, but it was not enough.

Senior pitcher Meghan Dennis was saddled with the loss throwing 5 innings allowing 10 hits and 6 runs (5 earned) with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts to fall to 5-4.

Game 2

RU (18-4 overall, 8-0 AAC) again got out to a 2-0 lead in game two before a home run from Azurdia made it 2-1 after two innings. It was her third of the season. RU then had a 3-run third inning to increase their lead to 5-1. Columbia came back with 2 runs in the third on a Sharp RBI single and a Kylie Smith RBI single. RU then added two more runs in the 6th for the 7-3 win.

Senior pitcher Kylie Smith suffered the loss falling to 5-6 throwing just two innings allowing 8 hits, 5 runs and 2 homers. Reliever Paige Branham then came on in the third inning and held the powerful Eagles to just 5 hits and 2 runs on 2 walks and a strikeout.
