Warner's Terrific Pitching Helps Koalas Upset Brenau

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College softball team split their conference doubleheader with first place Brenau University (Ga.) on Friday afternoon winning game two 4-2 after falling 11-2 in game one. Brenau is ranked as the #1 hitting team in the nation in the NAIA.

GAME 2: CC 4, BU 2

Senior starting pitcher Addison Warner (6-5) shut down the top offense in the conference throwing all 7 innings allowing just two runs on 5 hits while walking three and striking out four. She shut out the Tigers over the final five innings of the game.

The top of the Koala lineup led the offense in game two as middle infielders Ashlynn Wolff and Maggie Hinz combined for 6 hits to lead the 12-hit attack as each went 3 for 4 in the game while scoring three runs between them. Four different Koalas recorded an RBI in the win with senior 1B Aliyah Crawley getting Columbia on the board in the third inning with her run-scoring single driving in Wolff. Junior DH Ally Boyd then tied the game in the 5th with an RBI single before freshman catcher Reagan Kelly followed with an RBI double to give Columbia its first lead of the day. The Koalas then added an insurance run in the 6th inning on Hinz's RBI single.

Freshman 3B/P Madison Cheek, sophomore outfielder Lana Hampson and junior pinch-hitter Sophia Caley each recorded hits as well.

GAME 1: BU 11, CC 2 (6 INNINGS)

Unfortunately for the Koalas in game one Friday, Brenau showed their offensive prowess scoring 11 runs on 12 hits to dominate CC 11-2 in 6 innings. Starting pitcher, Ally Boyd, (6-6) lasted just 1.2 innings in this one allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Cheek then came on in relief of Boyd in the 2nd inning to throw 3.1 innings giving up 5 runs on 6 hits with a walk and two Ks. Reliever Amanda Lohrey also threw an inning allowing one run on one hit.

Columbia scored their two runs on a wild pitch in the first inning to get within 3-1 and then on a sacrifice fly from Cheek in the 6th. Boyd and Crawley led the team with two hits apiece while Hampson recorded a hit as well.

The Koalas improve to 12-14 overall and 7-5 in the AAC to remain 8th in the conference while Brenau suffered their first conference loss dropping to 5-1 and 16-5 overall.

Columbia will next remain home to host Bryan College on Wednesday evening at 5 and 7 pm under the lights from the Sutton Complex in Columbia.
