CC Softball Sweeps Games at Union

BARBOURVILLE, KY - The Columbia College softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep over Union Commonwealth College on the road in Kentucky Sunday afternoon. The Koalas won game one 9-3 and triumphed in game two 7-4.

GAME 1: CC 9, UC 3

In game one, CC got out to an early 2-1 lead as the Koalas scored on a passed ball and a bases-loaded walk. A four-run fourth inning then followed giving CC the 6-1 lead on a RBI double from senior 1B Aliyah Crawley, a two-run single from junior DH Ally Boyd and an RBI single from freshman 3B Elaina Seymour. Another RBI single from Boyd in the 5th was followed by a sacrifice fly from Boyd in the 7th that brought in junior SS Ashlynn Wolff while freshman catcher Reagan Kelly's RBI single padded the lead to 7 in the 7th at 9-2.

Leading the Koala's 14-hit attack was Boyd with her 3 hits and four RBI while Seymour also recorded three hits. Notching two-hit games were the infield trio at the top of the lineup: Wolff, freshman 2B Maggie Hinz and Crawley while they combined to score six runs as well. Freshman RF Madison Cheek also registered a double and RBI while Hinz and junior pinch runner Bailey Strickland stole bases. 

Senior pitcher Addison Warner picked up the win (8-6) throwing 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while walking two and striking out six. 

GAME 2: CC 7, UC 4

In game two, Columbia jumped out to a 6-2 lead after four innings before Union rallied against the game two pitcher, Ally Boyd, for two runs in the 5th. Boyd then helped her cause with an insurance RBI single in the 7th to make it 7-4 while junior reliever Kynsly Gehling closed out the game for her first save throwing three scoreless innings walking two and striking out three. Boyd (7-8) allowed 3 earned runs on 6 hits while walking two and striking out two over four innings.

Kelly got CC on the board first with her first inning RBI single to bring home Hinz while Seymour's two-run double in the third made it 3-1. Crawley then knocked a bases-clearing three-run double in the 4th inning to stake the Koalas to a 6-1 advantage. Kelly led the offense with a three-hit game while Crawley had two doubles and 3 RBI. Hinz and Boyd also recorded two hits each as part of the 10-hit attack.

Crawley continues to lead the team with a .381 batting average. 

The Koalas improve to 15-17 overall and 10-8 in the conference (8th place) with the win while dropping Union to 5-15 overall and 3-9 in the AAC.

Columbia will next go on the road to Spartanburg, SC on Friday to face two NAIA foes in neutral site games played at SMC. They will face Florida National at 11 am and Georgia Gwinnett at 3 pm.
