Women's Hoops top SMC, improve to 3-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Columbia College women's basketball team held off Spartanburg Methodist 73-59 on the road Wednesday afternoon to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Lady Koalas were led by sophomore guard Anaya Muhammad's 19 points on 7 of 8 shooting while guard Makayla Street scored 13 points and grabbed four steals off the bench.

Columbia got off to a fast start leading 22-15 after the first quarter. CC then played terrific defense in the second quarter outscoring the Pioneers 20-12 to take a 42-27 halftime lead.

CC extended their lead to 17 after three as they won the third frame 16-14. Columbia kept their 15-point lead throughout the fourth until five minutes remained when SMC went on a 6-0 run to trim the Koala lead down to 9 but could get no closer. CC shot 53 percent from the floor and 41 percent from three while also going 14 of 15 from the free throw line.

Guard Tysonia Lowe scored 8 points with 3 rebounds, a steal and an assist while guards Lauren Wearbon and Keyshuna Fair combined to score 11 points off the bench as Wearbon added 3 rebounds and Fair grabbed two steals. Sophomore wing Jadein Haynes also posted 7 points and a block.

The Koalas, now 3-0, will have the weekend off, but next remain on the road to face Johnson & Wales on Monday at 5 pm in Charlotte.
