Lady Koalas Hold Off Brenau for 10th Win
GAINESVILLE, Ga. - The Columbia College women's basketball team got off to a great first half start and went on to hold off AAC foe Brenau University 74-67 on the road Wednesday evening in north Georgia.
The Lady Koalas continue their best start in school history improving to 10-1 overall and remaining in a four-way tie for 1st place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference at 5-1.
Columbia was led by senior guard Keyshuna Fair and her 18 points and 2 steals as she knocked down two 3-pointers. Sophomore point guard Tysonia Lowe also finished in double-figures pouring in 11 points with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Columbia shot 43.5% from the floor overall and 31 percent from three making just five while BU made 10 threes shooting 34.5% and 39 percent overall.
Junior guard Makayla Street also shot 5 of 8 from the floor en route to scoring 14 points off the bench for CC while adding three rebounds. Fellow junior guard Layla Wall also added 4 points and 3 assists while forwards Tamyra Davis and junior De'Asia Feaster combined for 15 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Forward Kamya Hatten registered 5 points, 3 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block off the bench as well.
CC got off to another good start leading 18-11 after the first quarter before putting on an offensive show in the second scoring 27 points to outscore the Lady Tigers by 10 and take a 45-28 lead. Brenau (2-8, 1-5 AAC) then made a comeback in the second half scoring 18 in the third to outscore the Koalas by seven before a competitive fourth quarter saw Columbia hold off the Tigers. Even as Brenau trimmed their deficit down to five at the 4:30 mark, CC would not be deterred and increased their lead back up to eight at 70-62 with two minutes to play. However, BU could not get closer than five points the rest of the way.
Columbia will now return home to host Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
