Columbia moves to 2-0 with win over Brewton Parker
The Koalas soccer team upped their season record to 2-0 with a comprehensive 10-0 victory against the visiting Brewton Parker Barons on Tuesday afternoon at Younts Stadium.
Brewton Parker fought hard considering they only had the bare eleven players, but the quality and work rate of Columbia eventually told the tale.
It took just over ninety seconds for the Koalas to score, as Senior Ashley Tanner scored her first goal of the season off an assist from first year Courtney Carrier. Tanner added a second in the 11th minute, turning and finishing past Barons keeper Whitney Gay after a pass from senior Peyton Lee.
Sophomore Ruby Hallam then opened her 2016 goalscoring account six minutes later, finishing after a goalmouth scramble from a corner that was taken by junior Caitlin McDonald, who was credited with the assist. Tanner completed her hat-trick in the 26th minute, again slotting past Gay after senior Anna Seder had slipped her a through ball.
Columbia added a further two goals before half-time, as Junior Lexi Cesario scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Senior Alexa Leopold, and Carrier scored for the second consecutive game with Leopold notching her second assist of the game.
The second half was much of the same from the Koalas, with Tanner contributing her fourth and final goal of the game in the 51st minute, with Carrier getting credit for the assist for her second of the game.
The Barons made it tough work for Columbia in the second half, but a ten minute flurry midway through the half saw an additional three goals for the Koalas.
First, Carrier and Tanner combined again in the 63rd, this time in reverse, as the first year Carrier finished a pass from Tanner to make it 8-0. Leopold then made it 9-0 in the 68th minute, striking from long range after a corner was knocked out to her by First Year Charlotte Daniels. Finally, McDonald scored her first of the season, again a shot from outside the box, with an assist from Ashley Tanner.
For the game, Columbia outshot Brewton Parker 36-1, with Gay making 9 saves in goal for the Barons. Juniors Kat Yahnke and Morgan McCray shared the duties in goal for the Koalas, with Yahnke credited for the win and McCray picking up the shutout and the lone save of the game for Columbia.
Columbia plays again Friday evening against Coker College in Hartsville, SC, in a scrimmage, before returning home to Younts Stadium next weekend for their toughest tests of the young season.
