Women's Swimming Finishes 4th at AAC Meet

KINGSPORT, TN - The Columbia College women's swim team finished 4th our of six schools over the weekend at the 3-day AAC Championships from Tennessee.

The women's 200 yard Medley Relay team started things off on Thursday evening placing 5th in 2:02 led by the team of sophomore Kayle Buss in the lead leg followed by freshman Sabrina Schiavon, junior Giuliana Schiavon and finally senior Andrea Piedra in the closing leg with the fastest time on the team in 27.4 seconds.

Piedra also swam the distance race, the 500 Free and finished 13th in a time of 6:05. CC was then led by Buss in the 200 IM as she placed 10th out of 14 in a time of 2:20 while teammate, Giuliana finished 12th in 2:31.

The 800 Free Relay team then finished 4th in a time of 9:27 with S. Schiavon in the lead leg swimming in 2:29, followed by sophomore Isabelle Jensen in 2:24, G. Schiavon on the third leg in 2:16 with Piedra then touching in 2:17.

Milligan Univ. (TN) was in first place after day one, followed by Union (KY), Brenau (Ga.), Columbia, WV Tech, and Pikeville (KY).

On day two, the Lady Koalas began with the 200 Free Relay and finished 5th in 1:50 with Buss on the lead leg (27.1), followed by Piedra (27.05), S. Schiavon (28.3) and Jensen (27.5).

Giuliana Schiavon then placed 6th of 7 in the 400 IM in a time of 5:25 while Piedra was 8th in the finals in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:11.

Buss led the ladies in the 100 Breast coming in 7th out of 15 in a time of 1:13 with splits of 34.5 and 39.4 seconds. Sabrina Sachivaon then finished 12th in the 100 Breast in 1:19 while Lucy Ellisor was 14th in 1:42. Sophomore Annabelle Lee then came in 13th in the 100 Backstroke in a time of 1:17.

Finally the 400 Medley Relay closed out day two with the Koala women placing 4th in 4:35 led by Buss, Sabrina, Giuliana, and Piedra with the fastest leg in 1:01. CC was still 4th of 6 teams with 184 points.

Senior Andrea Piedra then began Day three with the longest distance race of the meet, the 1650 yard Freestyle and she came away with a 10th place finish in 21:29. Buss, Jensen, and Lee all swam the 200 Backstroke next with Buss placing 7th of 12 in 2:17 while Jensen came in 10th in 2:28 and Lee in 11th in 2:51. Jensen was also 13th of 16 in the 100 Free in 1:03 with splits of 29.7 and 33.6.

Sabrina Schiavon led the Koalas in the 200 Breast placing 11th in 2:57 while her sister Giuliana finished the 200 Butterfly in 2:40 to place 7th. Finally the lady Koalas ended the meet by placing 4th in the 400 Free Relay in 4:05 led by Piedra (1 minute), Buss (59.8 sec), G. Schiavon (1:04), and Jensen (one minute). *Jensen bested her 100 Free race time by 3 seconds in the relay.

Milligan won the meet with 928 pts, followed by Brenau with 668, Union with 621, Columbia with 273, WV Tech with 172 and Pikeville with 20.
