Lady Koala Tennis Splits with TMU and Johnson

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College women's tennis team suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat at home against conference foe Truett-McConnell last Thursday. They then rebounded to defeat Johnson University on the road 5-2 on Monday in Tennessee.

In the Truett match, Columbia received wins in doubles from the top teams of Mariane Lima and Aniya Sims at the #1 spot by a 6-4 score and from Helena Jokanovic and Vienne Geren at the #2 spot, 6-3.

Lima and Jokanovic then each won their respective singels matches at the #1 and #2 lines to stake CC to a 4-2 advantage. Lima won 6-0, 6-0 and Jokanovic won 6-1, 6-1.

However, Truett would rally to win singles matches at the #3, #4, and #5 lines as well as two forfeit wins to squeak out the unimpressive win over the Koalas. Sims dropped a heartbreaking 7-6, 7-6 match at the 3 line which was the deciding bout in the match.

 

Columbia then traveled on to Johnson, TN on Monday for another conference bout and grabbed the 5-2 win using four singles wins and two doubles wins. Each of the doubles teams won by 6-2 scores with Lima and Sims at the top line and Jokanovic and Geren at the two.

Jokanovic then won 6-2, 6-0 at the top line followed by Lima winning 6-1, 6-0 at th 2 line. Joye Tate then won 10-6 at the 5 line while Sims won a tough 3-set match at the 3 line, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to clinch the match.

The women improve to 4-4 on the season and will next host Div. III Maryville on Friday at 2 pm and Milligan on Saturday at 2.
