Women's Tennis Competes at Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Columbia College women's tennis team competed in the Div. II Coker Invitational over the weekend in nearby Florence against all NCAA division 2 opponents.

Leading the way was senior Helena Jokanovic as she went 1-1 before retiring in her 3rd place match to finish 4th. Helena won her opener in Flight B rallying from a set down to win 1-6, 6-2, 12-10 over Coker. She then fell to the eventual champion from Benedict 1-6, 2-6 in the semis. Junior Natalia Diaz Sanchez also competed but went 0-2 in Flight B falling in her opener 1-6, 3-6 and then 2-6, 0-6 in the consolation bout.

In Flight C singles, junior Aniya Sims finished 4th as she went 1-2 winning her opening bout 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 before falling to the eventual champ in the semis. She then made a comeback against Chowan in the third place match but fell 0-6, 4-6. Sophomore Vienne Geren and freshman Rachel Thompson also competed with Geren going 0-3 to place 8th.

In the doubles bracket, the team of Jokanovic and Diaz finished 6th in Flight B as they fell 3-6, before winning their consolation match 6-1 over Chowan but then fell in the 5th place match 4-6 to Benedict. The doubles team of Sims and Thompson then finished 8th as they fell 1-6 to Coker, 2-6 to Benedict and 3-6 to Chowan in the 7th place match.

The Lady Koalas will next be in action when they travel to Raleigh to battle William Peace Univ. on Oct. 26 at 2 pm.
