Lady Koala Tennis Shuts Out SW Virginia but Falls to Brenau and Milligan

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College women's tennis team shut out Southwest Virginia CC 3-0 at home on Wednesday afternoon.

The Ladies first got the doubles point on the board as the team of Nat Diaz and Rachel Thompson stormed to a 6-1 win. The Koalas then won both singles matches in the shortened meet as junior Joye Tate and sophomore Vienne Geren each won easily. Tate won 8-3 at the top spot while Geren won 8-2 at the 2 spot while SWVCC had to forfeit the rest. 

Last weekend, the Lady Koalas battled hard but came up short during their past two AAC contests. CC fell 6-1 at Milligan Univ. (TN) on Saturday while their rally fell short against Brenau University (Ga.) 5-2 at home on Tuesday.

Senior Helena Jokanovic led Columbia as she won both of her singles matches in the games. She won 6-3, 6-4 against Milligan and 6-0, 6-3 vs. Brenau with each match at the #2 spot.

At #1 singles, junior Natalia Diaz fell 6-1, 6-3 at Milligan and 6-3, 6-0 against Brenau. However, Rachel Thompson pulled out two big wins against BU on Tuesday first teaming with Diaz to win 6-4 at the #2 doubles spot before winning her singles match in a 10-8 third set tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 6-3, 3-6. 

Jokanovic and junior Aniya Sims then lost a tough #1 doubles match against Brenau falling 6-4 to lose the doubles point as the Koala #3 team of Joye Tate and Camryn McCutchen fell 6-2 against BU and MU. Sims then put up a valiant effort at the #4 spot in singles against Brenau before going down 3-6, 6-4, 6-10 in the third set tiebreak.

MU improves to 6-8 overall and 4-3 in the AAC while Brenau goes to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in conference. SWVCC falls to 0-3.

The Koalas improved to 7-5 overall and are now 2-5 in the conference and will next remain home to host Pikeville (KY) Saturday at 1:00 PM.
