Bulldogs Bite Koalas, Win Straight Sets

COLUMBIA, SC- Columbia Volleyball returned to action less than 24 hours after the five-set thriller against Johnson, welcoming Union to town. The Bulldogs got the best of the Koalas, winning in straight sets, 25-21, 25-15, 25-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With both sides coming off a game last night (Union was at CIU), the play started slowly as tired legs showed themselves.

  • The two sides went back and forth throughout the first set, similar to last night's third, but the Koalas couldn't get over the hump, dropping the opener 21-25.

  • Union controlled the second set, using the momentum they gained from the first, eventually going up 2-0 with a ten-point set win.

  • The Koalas jumped out to an early lead in the third, but it quickly evaporated thanks to timely hitting from the Bulldogs and untimely errors on the home side.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • As a team, Union posted a .218 kill %; they were led by Emily Shumaker, who finished 11 of her 14 attacks for a match-high .714K%.

  • Debra Shephard again set the table for the Koalas, handing out 16 helpers.

  • Destiny Brown led the offense with five kills on 11 attempts, a .364K%.

  • Although she saw limited time, Kasey Brough was effective on the court; she finished off two of her three attacks with a .667 K%.

UP NEXT:

The Koalas will enjoy a few days off but remain home on Tuesday when they welcome Brenau to town at 6:30 p.m.
